SilSo™ MEDICAL

Silicones for Medical Manufacturing

Silicones are used intensively and in many different ways in the healthcare industry. Silicones support medical training aides, prosthetics and orthopaedic devices, dental moulds, and various consumer products.

Due to their chemical make-up, silicones comply with healthcare quality standards because they are hypoallergenic, non-hazardous once cured. They are ideally suited for medical applications as they do not react with most chemicals and substances, do not promote bacterial growth and remain stable in humid environments.

CHT’s range of silicone technology feature one-component and two-component silicone elastomers with either addition or condensation cure chemistry. CHT's addition crosslinking silicone elastomers are physiologically harmless and have minimal shrinkage after the vulcanisation crosslinking is complete, with no harmful by-products. These features make them a perfect fit for use in the medical fields, offering a safe and reliable manufacturing process. In addition, specialty catalysts and product enhancers are available to meet certain process requirements or achieve deidicated final cure properties.

Since many medical applications using silicone require daily skin contact, CHT offers a series of silicones that are safe for skin with ISO 10993 certification.

Among the classic medical silicone applications are:

  • Anti-decubitus mattresses and pillows
  • Cushioning
  • Prosthetic liners
  • Orthopaedic inlays
  • Body part prostheses
  • Medical simulation and anatomical models
  • Dental duplication
  • Sports bandages

Prosthetics

Silicones are non-irritant to skin. Prosthetic liners made from silicone benefit patients because it has proven to be comfortable against skin, hypoallergenic, and endure long-term wear and daily stretching.
Prosthesis manufacturers usually produce custom-made liners based on the individual anatomy of the customer. Due to their versatile physical properties, silicones can be easily formed into unique shapes and sizes, making them the perfect material.

CHT’s high quality silicones are also used to produce replacement body part prostheses such as breast forms, hands, feet, etc. To help create natural skin tones, pigments can be added to the silicone to further personalise the client’s prosthesis.

Dental Duplication

The CHT product range also includes easy-to-use, low-viscosity silicone with a mixing ratio of 1:1, which captures fine details and convinces with fast curing and processing. These silicones are excellently suited for dental technical requirements, are soft and contribute to easy removal of models.
