CHT R. Beitlich GmbH practises for emergencies at the site in Oyten

On November 9th, 2016 a breakdown was initiated at the premises of CHT R. Beitlich GmbH in Oyten in order to practise the necessary procedures and measures for an emergency and to thoroughly test the function of technical alarm systems.

This emergency training also aimed at improving the cooperation within local fire brigades and the company and to enable the local fire brigades to get to know the on-site conditions to be ideally prepared for a possible emergency.

For ensuring a possibly realistic procedure neither the local fire brigades nor the CHT crisis team knew about the emergency training beforehand, so that they all first assumed that the breakdown was real.

At around 7.30 p.m. a chemical accident was simulated, namely a damaged drum with a combustible liquid at the silicone production. The drum had been damaged by a forklift truck; the liquid was spilling. In the assumed scenario roughly 100 litres of a combustible liquid were expected to have been spilt.

The company area affected by the incident is equipped with state-of-art measuring devices to monitor a possible explosive atmosphere. These measuring devices warn the staff as soon as smallest risks occur, so that quick measures can be taken, and the staff can leave the building safely.

After first emergency measures taken by present staff the fire brigades were alarmed via the fire alarm system. This system immediately informs the fire brigades in Oyten and Bassen through the rescue coordination centre in Verden. Moreover, the in-house security team and the crisis team which meets within a really short time are automatically involved. In the present scenario the fire brigades ensured the fire protection on site and started then immediately with the recovery of the spilling drum.

At all producing sites CHT R. Beitlich GmbH has a crisis team of experts trained for emergencies which is supported by the in-house fire protection group. The latter provides all people involved with necessary information and materials and coordinates the organisational procedures. In a real crisis a communication process is additionally started which depending on the significance of the incident provides the public, especially neighbours, with comprehensive information in due time.
