All over the world, light washes on blue denim jeans are mainly bleached with chlorine bleaching lye. A simple, cheap system with good reproducibility. Contrary arguments are discussed, e.g. in the areas of ecology and possible irritations and smell from neutralisation products which have not been completely removed. There is not inconsiderable fibre damage with bleaching processes using chlorine bleach lye. A further not insignificant drawback is the fashion aspect. Chlorine-bleached indigo has a very specific colour character which does not always correspond to fashionable trends.
Laccases as bleaching agents for blue denim are ecological alternatives. Colour shades which can be achieved with laccase bleaches have become well-established in fashion. In jeans bleaching, laccases work exclusively on the indigo, with minimal fibre damage. The processes are simple and easily reproducible. An economic comparison with chlorine bleaching lye definitely makes no sense. However, as soon as fashion dictates an attractive grey look for bleached jeans, this can no longer be achieved with chlorine bleaches alone. Here the laccase is no longer just an ecological alternative.
Laccases can be used on their own for bleaching treatments up to good medium bleaching levels. However, the typical colour tone of a chlorine bleaching can also already be changed into an exclusive grey shade with short subsequent processes following an upstream chlorine bleaching.
Laccases are being used more and more instead of subsequent washing processes directly after a stone or enzyme wash. Soiled filling yarns and pockets can thus be subsequently cleaned. And a light colour tone change to grey, as often desired, can also be achieved thus.
